What Readers Are Saying
“Great science fiction doesn't try to predict any kind of future. Rather, it tends to use a more or less possible future to say something about the present. Ideas, not imagined technology, carries all of the best works in science fiction, and The Abyss follows that tradition.
That said, it doesn't feel fantastical. I find the entire narrative plausible, and grounded. It quickly becomes obvious that Dawe is a good knower of people, by which I mean that out of all of the, what, dozens of people whose interviews and first-hand testimonies that we get to take part of, however short the interaction, feel real. Believable. Once the interview session is over, I am convinced that they will go on with their lives. As soon as I start reading, I remember who they were, because they're distinct enough to be separate people.
The one reason that this doesn't get a full 5/5 from me lies with my personal taste rather than with The Abyss. When it comes to literature, I tend to not be drawn to military scifi. Good for me, though, because so far the things that turn me off (getting into weapon specs, listing army units or getting into the nitty gritty of strategies) have been limited. It's clear that the point is about the stories told by the survivors, whoever they may be, and not about reenacting a war fantasy IN SPACE.
Dawe has so far really managed to pull off writing us a puzzle, and for each installment we get a piece closer to seeing a full picture. Looking forward to the next one.”

“If you like the mixture of found footage style format via retrospective interviews to portray a unique blend of technically sound worldbuilding systems, immersive historical speculation and true feeling of gray morality in characters, consider checking this out! F.P. Dawe is an talented writer with incredibly range of works~
The format allows you to jump right into the world, and history is slowly revealed. It does what the best speculative sci-fi does, portray real humans amidst grand cosmic scale.”

“Extremely deep backstory. Intriguing characters revealed in an unique interview style. Huge world (galactic) history and world building. Multiple story lines. If you like your science fiction told through people and not things, then this is one you will enjoy. I especially like the varying dialogue, personalities, and quotes like: “Earth has enough for every man’s needs, but not enough for every man’s greed.” That was true once, I think. Not anymore though, that old planet gave all she could. Even so, we always wanted more; we always want more… it’s in our nature. long pause Doesn’t make us bad, but it certainly doesn’t make us good either.”
